CHARLESTON, WV - Charlie's Angles, The OC and Scream 2 are just a few of the directing credits from the man who wants to bring the story of the Marshall plane crash to the movie for Waner Brothers studios. Hollywood is coming to Huntington to shoot a film on the Marshall plane crash.

McG who directed both Charlie's Angles films will will produce and direct the Marshall film and while most people in Huntington have not been aware of it, the film team has spent quite a bit of time in Huntington researching the project. They have interviewed and talked to people in the comuunity and in an interview with WSAZ NewsChannel 3's Dave Benton expressed a passion about portraying an event that changed the lives of som many in the Huntington and Marshall communities.

"I just really responded to the material." said the McG. He and his partners say 70 to 75% of the movie will be shot on Marshall's campus and downtown Huntington.

"I want to shoot Marshall at the M.U. Student Center and the Keith Albee. Many campus shots will incorporate Marshall students as extras."

Marshall President Stephen Kopp assured the Marshall campus community that things will remain as normal as possible. "Nobody's classes will be disrupted."

Additional announcements are due next week naming other cast members in addition to Matthew McConaughey who reportedly will play the role of former Marshall football coach Jack Lengyel.

Principal photography is scheduled to start in late March and should be complete by the end of spring.

*since this article appeared, both Matthew Fox of Lost and recent Academy Award nominee David Strathairn have signed on to this project. Anticipated premiere date is November 10, 2006.

By SCOTT WARTMAN - The Herald-Dispatch

Lori Wolfe/The Herald-Dispatch

Local restaurateur Rocco Muriale will open a bar/restaurant in the Frederick Hotel as part of a rebirth of the Huntington landmark.

HUNTINGTON -- Dances, jazz bands, hotel rooms and spirits will return to the Frederick Hotel30 years after the last hotel guest checked out.

Local restauranteur Rocco Muriale and developer John Hankins say they hope to open the former hotel at 940 4th Ave. by April or May with hotel rooms, a restaurant/bar, main ballroom and catering services.

The incandescent glow of the hotel’s marquee will once again shine on 4th Avenue as the hotel returns to its former splendor, Muriale said.

"I’m trying to get the old nostalgia back in a new-age shuffle," Muriale said. "I am trying to bring back a piece of time. It will be a great place to relax after work."

Muriale has gained fame for running Rocco’s Ristorante in Ceredo for the past 28 years as well as distributing Italian food products to local grocers. Hankins owns and operates several downtown buildings and has owned the Frederick Building since 1999.

Muriale said he will open a bar/restaurant, tentatively called Club 21, in the place where the bar Tapas operated on the first floor until it closed in 2004.

The club will cater to a 21-and-older crowd and have a dress code requiring collared shirts, no shorts and no ball caps, Muriale said.

Music from live jazz bands will frequently fill the bar, Muriale said. Club 21 won’t be a full restaurant, but will offer appetizers along with the full-service bar, he said.

People will be able to buy memberships to the club to get special deals on drinks and food and not pay a cover, he said. Club 21 will provide a relaxed atmosphere and sophisticated place to gather, Muriale said.

"I want people to feel they can have a place they can come to without a loud crowd," Muriale said. "I am looking for a place where guys my age can go out and have a drink."

The rebirth of the Frederick, however, won’t end with a new night club. The 12 remaining hotel rooms that have largely remained unused since the hotel closed on June 24, 1973, will once again house guests, Muriale said. The rooms include a 5,000-square-foot presidential suite.

The rooms will be open to travelers or to groups that rent the ballrooms for events. The first-floor ballroom directly in the entrance foyer of the building will be ready for private parties and weddings when the facility opens in April or May. A larger, second-floor ballroom will be ready for use next year, Muriale said.

Muriale will also run a catering business out of the Frederick.

Muriale said he anticipates a high demand for the Frederick for private functions with seven private events already planned in the building.

Community dances with swing music and jazz will return to downtown Huntington when work is completed on the second floor ballroom, he said. The ballroom will serve as a concert venue for swing and jazz bands

"It will be like the old days, the old dinner and dances," Muriale said.

Some of the original features of the circa 1906 hotel will also be restored. Hankins and Muriale said the Turkish baths in the basement will be rebuilt.

Much of the hotel’s ornate space has been idle for decades, including the second-floor ballroom with 25-foot-high ceilings, Muriale said.

"It has just sat there and deteriorated," Muriale said.

The Frederick’s current tenants will not be affected by the renovations, Hankins said. The project will restore the Frederick’s features but not alter the building, Muriale and Hankins said.

"We want to bring it back to its original grandeur," Hankins said.

Hankins wouldn’t say how much the renovations will cost. With the exception of the second-floor ballroom, Muriale remained confident the night club, hotel, first-floor ballroom and catering businesses will be ready within three months.

The emergence of Pullman Square has made the rebirth of the Frederick possible, Hankins said.

"I can certainly say the opening of Pullman Square has, in my opinion, done a lot to make people aware of downtown Huntington," Hankins said.
